Atlanta city leaders want to bring college football's brand new national championship game to town. On Tuesday, college football announced plans for a brand-new postseason playoff, and Atlanta is wasting no time getting in on the act.
Chick-fil-A Bowl CEO Gary Stokan says college football's new playoff offers a huge opportunity for Atlanta. His group plans to bid to bring the title game to Georgia, and they also want to bid to move the Chick-fil-A Bowl into the top tier of bowls as a national semifinal game.
"There's no other city in the country that's hosted the Olympics and Super Bowls and Final Fours-- we have," said Stokan.
Other cities like Dallas, New Orleans and Miami are also looking to be in the championship and semifinal rotation. Stokan says it could mean huge crowds, attention and plenty of dollars for Atlanta.
The new playoff will start in 2014, and the bidding process starts now. By this time next year, Atlanta should know if it will host semifinal and championship games when they begin.
