Wayne Reynolds Scholarship recognizes junior golfers

ATLANTA -

The world's best amateur golfers are competing at Druid Hills Golf Club this week, but they aren't the only ones who will benefit from the tournament. Prominently displayed at the front of the main clubhouse is a plaque recognizing the 24 recipients of the annual Wayne Reynolds Scholarship.

"Mr. Reynolds felt very, very strongly that junior golfers need a great step up. Many of them have financial difficulty and have a challenge in paying for their college," said Dogwood Invitational chairman Edward Toledano.

While amateur golfers from around the world compete to win the Dogwood Invitational, the Wayne Reynolds Scholarship benefits junior golfers from Georgia. This year's winner was Colin Grant of Lilburn.

"I explained that my parents had been divorced, and my mom has raised me as a single mom.  That she's been my biggest encouragement through my whole game of golf," said Grant.

Colin's mother, Pam Grant, is his high school golf coach, but she has worked multiple jobs in order to allow her son to attend Providence Christian Academy, where she found out about the $3,000 a year scholarship through a school counselor.

"It means a great deal. I don't have help putting him through school, so it is all on me and the adage, every little bit helps is certainly true," said Pam Grant.

Toledano says they like to have a student who knows where they want to go when they consider who will get the scholarship.

Colin will be attending to Clemson University in the fall where he has been accepted into the professional golf management program. Tough he would have never chosen to grow up without a dad in his life, he knows that he is a stronger person because of it.

"It's shaped my goals and it's shaped my life in ways that I wouldn't change. I'm happy with where my life is," said Colin.

The other charity that the Dogwood Invitational Benefits is Atlanta Junior Golf, which has introduced and taught the game to more than 10,000 kids in the metro area since its inception. For more information about the Dogwood Invitational and its charities, click here.
