Fayette Co. relay team heads to Junior Olympics

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. -

The Olympic opening ceremonies are set to begin in London Friday night, and a local relay team says they'll be watching as they gear up for a big race of their own.

When the Southside Pioneer Track Club traveled to Florida for an AAU meet, everyone kept asking, ‘Where is Fayetteville, Georgia?' When the relay team raced to victory during the event, the question was answered.

Devan Lewis and Solomon Bolds are seniors at Sandy Creek High School. Alex Phillips is a 2012 graduate of Fayette County High School, while Alphonso Alexander is a junior at the same school. The four make up one of the fastest 4 by 100 relay teams in the nation.

In addition to qualifying in individual races, their relay time of 41.10 earned them a place at the AAU Junior National Olympics in Houston. It's an accomplishment their Southside Pioneer Track Club coach says they've trained and worked hard for.

"These kids have to be in top, top physical condition to compete at this level. Them coming out here showing that they want to do well and get better, shows a lot about them, tells a lot about them," said coach David Petty.

The four members of the relay team say they're looking forward to Houston. They also have their eye on one day making it to the Olympic Games.

If and when the guys do make it to the Olympics, they'll be in good company. Sandy Creek High School graduate Christian Taylor is in London getting ready to compete in the triple jump.

The team leaves for the Junior Olympics in Houston this weekend.
