Braves' Fredi Gonzalez seeks education for Latinos

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez is calling for more education of young Latino players on the consequences of using performance-enhancing drugs.

Gonzalez also said Friday he would be in favor of stricter penalties - perhaps even a 1-year ban - for those who are caught breaking the rules if the current trend of positive tests and suspensions continues.

Gonzalez said the positive tests for testosterone and ensuing 50-game suspensions for both San Francisco Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera on Aug. 15 and Oakland Athletics pitcher Bartolo Colon on Wednesday are "bad for baseball."

Gonzalez points to the large number of Latin American players who have been suspended in the minor league program, up to 82 total as of Friday. There have been five suspended in the major league drug program.
