Univ. of Alabama apologizes to bakery over logo

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - The University of Alabama is apologizing to a local baker, who received a letter threatening legal action because some of her hand-decorated cakes and cookies carried university-related images.

Cookies sold at Mary's Cakes & Pastries in downtown Northport have included footballs and elephants with the letter "A." Some customers also ordered cakes decorated with a Crimson Tide theme. Collegiate Licensing Co. of Atlanta sent the letter, ordering her to stop selling the products.

The Tuscaloosa News reports (http://bit.ly/NoEDiW ) that university officials said the letter was not consistent with protocol normally followed by the university involving local businesses and trademark issues.

University spokeswoman Deborah Lane said the school will work with bakery owner Mary Cesar to resolve the issue quickly so it can continue to produce pastries with the Alabama logos.
