The game ball for the University of Georgia's football home opener on Saturday is taking an unusual path to get to Sanford Stadium in Athens.
The 2012 Game Ball Relay is a 24 hour, foot-powered event that will pass several Atlanta landmarks, such as Centennial Olympic Park, the CNN Center and the state capitol, as it makes its way to Athens for the showdown between the Bulldogs and the Buffalo Bulls on Saturday.
The UGA 1980 National Championship team took the first leg after visiting several patients at the Shepherd Center shortly after noon.
Former Shepherd Center patient and UGA baseball player, Chance Veazey, is participating in the event. He says it's his way to payback all those who supported him during his stay at the center.
During the late hours, the UGA Army ROTC cadets will keep the ball moving to make sure it arrives on time for Saturday's game.
The game ball is expected to arrive at the 50-yard line of Sanford Stadium at 12:20 p.m. with former legendary coach and athletic director Vince Dooley and Hall of Famer Charlie Trippi handing the pigskin over.
All the proceeds raised by the walk will go to the Shepherd Center.
