Authorities in Gwinnett County say Atlanta Falcons running back Michael Turner was arrested on Tuesday, hours after the Falcons beat Denver in their home opener.
Gwinnett County police say Turner was pulled over while driving a black Audi R8 at around 4 a.m. after being clocked doing 97 mph in a 65 mph zone on Interstate 85 northbound near Indian Trail Road. They say Turner was coming from the Magic City club in downtown Atlanta after the Falcons defeated the Broncos in a "Monday Night Football" game.
When the officer made contact with Turner, police say he could smell the odor of an alcoholic drink coming from Turner. The officer then conducted a DUI investigation.
Police say Turner was arrested after that investigation, and charged with speeding and driving under the influence.
Records from the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department show Turner was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail shortly after 5 a.m. and he was released shortly after 7 a.m.
The Atlanta Falcons released a statement on Tuesday, stating "We are aware of the situation involving Michael and are in the process of gathering more information. Because this is now a legal matter, the club will have no further comment at this time."
Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith said the team was upset at the news.
"He knows that we are disappointed in the decisions that he made," said Smith.
Smith said that all players operate under a collective bargaining agreement. That will determine whether Turner will play on Sunday, Smith said.
